MC Symphonic Winds Set for Winter Concert

Symphonic Winds, March 3.

Mississippi College’s Symphonic Winds Orchestra is booked for its winter concert on March 3 on the Clinton campus.

The program titled “Symphonies of Emotion” is set for 7:30 p.m. that Tuesday evening on stage at Swor Auditorium.

The event is free and open to the public.

The program includes works by retired MC music professor and composer James Sclater, such as his “Finale” from the Clintonian’s Symphony No. 2 for Band. Other musical selections include David Maslanka’s short symphony for band, “Give Us This Day.”

During the performance, three trumpeters from the student ensemble will treat the audience to Leroy Anderson’s “Bugler’s Holiday.”

Regional musical favorites will be performed as well, including “Memphis Blues” to “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans.”

MC music professor Craig Young conducts the group of student musicians.

Music lovers in metro Jackson shouldn’t miss another Mississippi College Music Department show that will be the last program in this season’s Sclater Chamber Series.

Set for February 27th, the program is titled “Celebrate Clinton.” It’s among several year-long events to showcase the solid partnership between Mississippi College and its hometown of Clinton.

The concert at the Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall begins at 7:30 p.m. The program will feature the music of two talented Clinton residents: Sclater and music professor Benjamin Williams.

Clinton’s Brick Street Quartet and Brick Street Trio will perform that evening. Sclater’s “Summer Solstice at Night” will be presented and accompanied by the splendid voice of MC music professor Viola Dacus.

Tickets sold at the door are for $20 for adults, and $15 for faculty and staff. The cost will be $5 for students and children.
